ICHABOD

NOTE: Not to be confused with another Ichabod, also from the USA.

BAND NAME: Ichabod
GENRE: Experimental Unblack Metal / Punk
STATUS: Unknown
LOCATION: USA (Ayden, North Carolina)

Joined Myspace on 4 December, 2007. Not sure if that's when the project formed or not.

EEE described the music on their old site as follows: "An angular, disjointed melodic unblack metal masterpiece. Ichabod's debut is much more akin to bands like Black Flag, Ash Pool and Bone Awl. Their brand of unblack is unmistakably infused with punk rock, post-rock and traditional metal."

Lineup:
Duncan Reese Paynter - Vocals, Guitars
Tyler Mitchell - Drums

Doxology (demo, year uncertain, Independent)
Format: CD

Mentioned [here]. This demo was sent to labels to get interest.

Somewhere along the way, I learned that the demo version had the same tracklist as the album version. However, I also know the mastering is different (the album version was mastered by EEE Recordings). I'm currently not sure if there are any other differences. (For example this could easily affect the track lengths.)

Someone on Metal Archives says this was released in 2008 but I don't have proof for this.

Doxology (album, 9 September, 2008, EEE Recordings)
Format: CD-R, black velvet bag, limited 50 copies, remastered

Released in a slimcase. Insert is in booklet format, yet the inner panels are blank. Lyrics are included in a separate fold-out lyric sheet (3 pages stapled together).

I messaged the label about this. If memory serves them correctly (this was over a decade ago, remember!) there were plans to do 2-3 versions of the album, but only the "50 copies in a velvet bag" version was ever released. It's not really clear why the other versions were never finished.

1) Knowledge of Good and Evil
2:28, lyrics:
God is not afraid of a computer game
The Holy Spirit cannot be swayed by a song
If Christians can be conquered by books about magic, superheroes,
The world is doomed anyway

Praise God! That He is not as weak as they think
He is ruler of the universe and is not subject to simple entertainment

We are bought with the price of His blood. Who then can pluck us from His arms?

Wizards of the Coast, Sony, Harry Potter?

Are these able to wage war with the Most High? No way!
Where is the glory? Where is the shield of strength? Where is the sword of the Spirit? They're in our hearts and in our hands. The elect need not be reduced to sniveling babies.

Take up the Spirit!

Trust in God!

2) Shades of Black
2:18, lyrics:
They give us a dialectic
With the typical mudslinging
A scientist makes a hypothesis
And the ends justify the means

They give us a dialectic
With the typical mudslinging
A scientist makes a hypothesis
And the ends justify the means

All hail the god of science, the titans of our age
Tyrannosaurus Hex!

They show us all the shades of black to make sure we keep an open mind,
but we are taught, faith in men, is better to keep us in line
They show us all the shades of black to make sure we keep an open mind,
but we are taught, faith in men, is better to keep us in line

"So the evening and the morning were the sixth day"

We are not accidents! We are not sons of apes!
But most importantly, we are not inbred and ignorant like they say!

We are sons of God!

3) A Nitelite Made a Graven Image
3:08, lyrics:
We hide in the warmth of the lightbringer's shadow,
Feeding on the hand that beats us.
For God did not give us a spirit of fear.
We keep our children afraid of the dark,
in fearful reverence of the moon.
Blaspheming the Lord we Christians hold dear

We hide in the warmth of the lightbringer's shadow,
Putting our faith in appearances.
It seems we'll have anything for a king.
We keep in our hearts
This fear of the dark
In praise of comfort, we sing;

Keep us safe, keep us sound, keep us from suffering for Your name. Keep us away from sinners, and the darkness in them.

"It is enough for a disciple that he be like his teacher, and a servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more will they call those of his household! Therefore do not fear them, for there is nothing covered that will not be revealed, and hidden that will not be known"

Oh bring us some light for the darkness is fearful to us.
The spirit is willing but our flesh has not enough trust.
If you are the lightbearer, I will stay in shadow.
If what you have they call warmth, I shall remain cold.
If your lies are enlightenment, I shall be called stupid.
Until the return of the Bright and Morning Star, that is my Lord Jesus.

4) With One Accord - A Call to Arms
1:49, lyrics:
"Do not forsake the assembling of yourselves together for by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body. But God composed the body, haven't given greater honor to the part the lacks it, that there should be no schism in the body, but that the members should have the same care for one another... Put on the whole armor of God that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil, for we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual host of wickedness in the heavenly places."

The things that have been said in this song are the words of the Lord. With one accord God has been praised, with one accord we have prayed, and our prayers have been heard. With one accord let us stay. Never growing weary of our work, never growing weary of each other.

5) To a Goddess
3:01, lyrics:
She changes everything she touches, at least that's what they say;
Astarte and Hecate are her names.
But what of Hera and Baal? No, this goddess is something different
And she's conveniently supported modern thought 5,000 years ago.

Oh it looks like I'll need another lifetime...

To a goddess who created herself this song is due.
May she rule with love and mercy and truth.
But may she not rule you if you don't want her,
there's not a right or wrong that we infer.
Just do what you will, with all that you will,
for this is quite pleasing to her.
To a goddess of convenience, your mysteries mesmerize the confused still.

She sets such divine interest upon the face of nature,
she has made womankind in her own image.
She makes celestial orbs move like clockwork,
and makes all plants grow in their due season.
But in the matters of human morality she gave no rhyme or reason.

Oh it looks like I will need another...
I said it looks like I will need another lifetime.
To make up for all the blasphemy and harm I've done to you Mother.
Maybe I will be reborn again and again... So that I may mock you for eternity!

6) Scrying on Deaf Ears
4:09, lyrics:
As Saul before you
You want an answer now
Ask the dead about the future
Thinking they've learned a lot while in the ground

Read the tea leaves, read the stars, read Egyptian tarot cards
Count the numbers, cast the pearls, analyze the fallen bones
(Analyze the fallen bones)

With one hand on the liver and one hand on the ouija board
You pretend to have control
These things give you a feeling of higher purpose
But you interpret them as you will
You feel you get the best of both worlds

Read the tea leaves, read the stars, read Crowley's tarot cards
Count the numbers, cast the pearls, you see the future in the palm of your hand
(See the future in the palm of your hand)

Let's stop pretending there is anything to this
You see what you want to see
Like looking at an ink blot
You can only see your thoughts

The future, in the palm of your hands
The future, in the palm of your hands
If you can tell the future, and you consult the dead
Are you not already dead (as Saul was before you)?
You're speaking to a crystal ball but precious stone cannot hear
You're scrying on deaf ears
You're scrying on deaf ears
You're scrying on deaf ears

Your precious stones cannot hear

You're scrying on deaf ears

7) Prima Nocturne
1:58, instrumental

8) Thy Will Be Done
2:40, lyrics:
I'm sitting in my room, waiting for a reply. These questions are important to us, but the Almighty is not our butler. God's voice can be so small sometimes it's hard to hear. God's voice can be so hard to hear.

I'm sitting here with an empty stomach, thinking this will help. Sometimes I think God wants us to walk on our own. Prayer and fasting can move mountains, but nothing can move the will of God.

If God had plainly answered every question we asked, how different our lives would be, some mighty thing would never have been done through us. Praise God for His flawless will; He sees past the petty trials of today and uses all evil for good.

9) Doxology
5:02, lyrics:
Oh God almighty, I'm sending this to You, to give You the glory
So many bend their knees before Your creations, Father. They long to be made new. It is only in Your counts, that there can be any peace, but to even the greatest sinner, You offer an honored seat, upon the soul's release.

Praise God, He is mightier than hell. The Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End. In His hands sits the book of life, yet He also holds the keys to hell.

He prepares us for a dwelling place, in a paradise we don't deserve to see. Isn't it wonderful to receive a second chance, when we are far from deserving? And to receive it openly from our Maker simply because He loves us. You must try to understand that hell is not of spite; God truly loves all His creation. It's just that the Lord is so perfect, He cannot be near sin, so He died on the cross so that we could choose to be with Him. Through this we can choose to live in heaven as though sin and death never existed. That is the power of God's love.

Now, when all Christians have accepted the sacrifice, you'll find God's word is true. With one utterance from His mouth, all creation declares Him lord. And your greatest deeds will not suffice, for before the great I AM, they are as rags made filthy, by your pride and stubbornness, that will be cleansed in the just hellfires of eternity.

Praise God, He is mightier than Hell, the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End. In His hands sits the book of life, yet He also holds the keys to hell. He prepares for us a dwelling place, in a paradise we don't deserve to see. From His mouth proceeds a mighty sword, that shall slay death itself. Only His hand can free Lucifer, or cast him into hell. He breathes in our wretched golem form. He breathes the soul of man. With this breath we find fulfillment, and without, we would have total nothing.

Praise God!
That He loves us!
Despite all that we've done!
He loves us through mistakes, acts of ignorance, and outright subordination!

10) A Triptych of Grace
6:15, lyrics:
They say that humans are social creatures, we rely on one another. In family, with friends, and in business, we put our faith in others. But a loving family can soon become a broken home. And friends will talk behind your back. And at work people only look out for themselves. I've lost all faith in these social creatures.

In the land of the free, there's a lot we can hope for, a blessed people we are indeed. But for most, all they have to hope for is a good retirement, fame, or world peace. And when you can retire you might be dead or getting that way. And when you achieve fame, you'll wish people would go away. And world peace can only be found with an ever-present gun. Hope has an end, even in the home of the brave. From a young age, we are taught that love conquers all. We see it in movies, hear it in stories, and expect it from our budding romances. A lot of us are willing to die for love. But how far can love go for us? Many have lost love to money, sex appeal, or mere convenience. Even when human love lasts there are imperfections. Conditions that make it fade or fluctuate in highs and lows. It seems our champion love, is easily conquered.

Praise the Lord, these limitations are not the end for Christians. We can partake of faith and love that never end. We can take faith in the solid Rock, who is always there for us and can't be moved. We can find hope in the kingdom of heaven, where the years of tribulation fade under the weight of eternity. We can find love in the arms of our First Love, who loves us unconditionally, and heals the broken heart.
