ECTHIRION (AxioM)

BAND NAME: Ecthirion
GENRE: Symphonic Black/Orchestral Metal, Power Metal, Medieval/Folk
STATUS: Active
LOCATION: United Kingdom (Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, England)

Formed as AxioM, playing power/viking metal.[1]

While they've kept the same basic mesh of styles, "Apocalyptic Visions" emphasizes their black metal side, while "Psalms of the Risen Dead" is more power metal-oriented.

Someone on Metal Archives said the band formed in 2006 as AxioM. [This page] says 2007. Their biography says they formed in 2008. Either way, they changed their name to Ecthirion in 2009.

"The band's vision is to be a beacon of light in dark places, in a world where evil dominates it is easy to follow what evil authorities and media dictate. Ecthirion aim to give all the credit for any success to God as they believe He is the source of all things good. The band aren't trying to be dark in any way and do not want to be mistaken for a Satanic act, the lyrics make this completely clear and are far from Satanic. The lyrics are written from a personal perspective and we hope them to be an encouragement to listeners." [2]

Vanquished Souls (NOT SURE IF LEGIT)

Found on Myspace. Not sure if it's actually a release, or an unrelated graphic for something else (eg a shirt design)

Apocalyptic Visions (EP)

7 May, 2009, Independent, Digital, NOT SURE IF LEGIT
22 May, 2009, Soundmass Records, CD
(2009-2011?), label uncertain, Digital

Guest appearances:
Azahel Frost - Harsh vocals (track 2)
Josh Edwards - Operatic vocals (track 2 & 4)
Eugen Dodenhoeft - Vocals (clean + harsh, track 3)
John Neale - Narration (track 4)

Metal Archives has an independent version listed for the 7th of May. However, their old Myspace blog list (you have to remove the header to see them...) indicate the release date was planned for the 4th but moved to the 22nd. The links themselves don't work so I can't see what they said, but it seems unlikely that it would have been released on the 7th?......

As I understand it, Soundmass ran Undark.net. In 2011, it was rebranded to "Soundmass Downloads". However, I'm not sure if this download was released in the Undark days; after it was rebranded; or after everything just went to Soundmass' main website.

1) Dawn of the Great Apocalypse
2:58, instrumental

2) Warmageddon
5:30, lyrics:
Dominum amarvimus
Christum expectavimus

Fight, good against evil, fight, it's finished
Forbidden from the light of day
Caught in a world of dark dismay
Lost souls in eternal pain
I'll never see your smile again

It feels like you're falling to the land of death
Where I'll never see your face again
Don't leave me here to fight alone
I need your love to keep me strong

3) Immortality
5:08, lyrics:
Death is chasing after you
Run fast you fool it's catching up
Satan's tearing at your mind
He wants your soul and bones to grind
Life's no game, it's real as hell
You think your mask will hide it well
Don't let yourself fade away
For I will miss you every day...

You cannot destroy my soul
Your filthy lies won't make me cold
My heart will never fade away
You cannot destroy me
I have immortality
You cannot destroy

Can't you see you're slowly fading
In this frozen world you're dying
I can see fear within your eyes
In the night I hear your crying

Pain is devouring your soul
Lies will slowly make you cold
Life is ebbing from your bones

Cannot destroy

4) Anthem for the Brave
7:02, lyrics:
Day is dawning on this fallen world
The morning star is rising
Eagles are soaring in the sky
And the sun is glistening on the water

The heart of the lion will set you free
A sacrifice for all to see

We ride over mountains
We sail across the seven seas
We fight for your glory

We ride over mountains
We sail across the seven seas
We fight for your glory

Ride over mountains
We sail across the seas
Fight for your glory
We will be free

The heart of the lion will set you free
All you mus do is truly believe

Ride over mountains
We sail across the seven seas
We fight for your glory

1) Uproot
5:03, lyrics:
My child, turn your eyes
From the evil of this world
Born into the land
Of darkness, death and hate
Things you should never see
Before your eyes
Injecting their venom
Unhindered by shame

As for me, I will call
Upon the name of my Lord
And my God will save me!
Battle will rage
And I hear the battle cry
Raging on into the night
I await the morning light

Uproot the enemy stronghold
Rooted in my heart
Shelter me under your wings
Until the day awakes

World, when will you see
See that the truth will set you free?

As for me, I will call
Upon the name of my Lord
And my God will save me!
Battle will rage
And I hear the battle cry
Raging on into the night
I await the morning light

Uproot the enemy stronghold
Rooted in my heart
Shelter me under your wings
Until the day awakes

Lift your eyes up to the hills
I will lift my eyes up to the hills
God, please don't give up on me
As for me
I will lift my eyes up to the hills
Resurrect me
Lift your eyes up to the hills
God, please don't give up on me
As for me
I will lift my eyes up to the hills
Resurrect me

2) Chariots of Elysium
4:41, lyrics:
Was your anger against the rivers?
Was your wrath against the sea?

You rode out on your horses of war
And chariots of salvation
You rode out in the name of justice
You came to judge the nations

Horses of war
Chariots of salvation
In the name of justice
To judge all creation
Horses of war
Chariots of fire
In the name of justice
Vanquish their empire

3) March of the Risen Dead
4:07, (vocalizing, no actual "lyrics")

4) Mortality
1:23, lyrics:
I won't show my respect to your pagan idolatry
I don't see the sense in twisting what you teach
I won't show my respect to your pagan idolatry
I don't see the sense in twisting what you believe

Is it out of selfish ambition or by true motivation?
is it to console your guilt or by human pride?
Humans can't become gods
We can't work out our own salvation
On our own we are simply mortal men!

On our own we are simply mortal men!

5) On Eagle's Wings
5:09, lyrics:
Raise your hands to the sky
For the battle is won
A victory cry
A new life has begun
Not by my own strength,
By that of my Lord
You're my strong tower
My shield and my sword

Ropes of death
Tied around my feet
Ropes of death
You heard me calling

Binding my feet they surrounded me
Sorrow and fear they were hounding me
Stealing my life all You've given me
I cry to You, You heard my voice, my cry

Starve my flesh

You are my strong tower
My fortress in the night
(O Lord God You are my fortress)
You saved me from the gates of hell
And heard my desperate cries
(You shelter me in Your love)
You saved me from the pit of destruction
Heard me crying in the night
(My high tower, You are my God)
In You I find my refuge
You gave me strength to win the fight

Raise your hands to the sky
For the battle is won
A victory cry
A new life has begun
Not by my own strength,
By that of my Lord
You're my strong tower
My shield and my sword

Ropes of death
Tied around my feet
Tied around
Rise inside

You are my deliverer
My strength since I was born
You saved me from eternal peril
(O Lord God You are my fortress)
My shelter from the storm
(You shelter me in Your love)
Elevated by your resurrection
(My high tower, You are my God)
Restored by the light
In You I find my freedom
You died to make my darkness bright

Raise your hands to the sky
For the battle is won
A victory cry
A new life has begun
Not by my own strength,
By that of my Lord
You're my strong tower
My shield and my sword

I will soar on wings like eagles
Bound in chains no more
To realms of glory I am borne
I will soar on wings like eagles
(I will soar on wings like eagles flying in the sky)
Over mountains I'll fly
Over valleys I will soar
I will soar on eagle's wings forevermore

Raise your hands to the sky
For the battle is won
A victory cry
A new life has begun
Not by my own strength,
By that of my Lord
You're my strong tower
My shield and my sword

I will soar on wings like eagles
Bound in chains no more
To realms of glory I am borne
I will soar on wings like eagles
(I will soar on wings like eagles flying in the sky)
Over mountains I'll fly
Over valleys I will soar
I will soar on eagle's wings forevermore

6) Though a Thousand Fall
6:31, lyrics:
Save me Lord
Raise me up
Awake my soul
Hide not Your face from me when I cry

And though a thousand fall
You hear me when I call

Even though I walk through
The valley of the shadow of death
I shall fear no evil
In You I find refuge
My victory

I raise my sword for the fatal blow
Death of pride being my desire
To my old self I bid goodbye
As You cut to the root with holy fire

Alone, forsaken.
O Father, why?
My heart of darkness held You there
Your blood ran cold
Your life's last cry
The Saviour of mankind is here

And though a thousand fall
You hear me when I call

Even though I walk through
The valley of the shadow of death
I shall fear no evil
In You I find refuge
My victory

Even though my journey
Takes me past the gates of Hell
In You I find refuge
My victory

7) Evanescent
9:52, lyrics:
First it bites, and then it chews
Proceeds to crumble, then consume
Nations rise and nations fall
But in itself defeats them all
It favours neither rich nor poor
But forces all men through the door-
Its hinges creak, its panels swing
The ancient pathway to the King
An open book before Him laid
My every deed therein displayed
(Fading, decaying, degrading, melting away)

There will be justice for what has been done
Unless they're forgiven by the blood of the lamb
There will be justice for what has been done
Unless they're forgiven by the blood of the lamb

Fading, decaying, degrading, melting away

Every child is born under the sun
Chases the wind then strives for reason
To the dust he'll return
Soon after he's come
Where will his soul find rest?
(Fading, decaying, degrading)

As the meadows wither in the fall
We will fade
As our mighty towers fall
We are flung into forever

Slowly melting away
Slowly fading away

As the meadows wither in the fall
We will fade
As our mighty towers fall
We are flung into forever

Our souls will ascend
To the gates of heaven
(There will be justice
For what has been done
Unless they're forgiven
By the blood of the lamb)
Our souls will be judged
By the deeds we've done
(Forever, Forever)

I know where I will be in the afterlife
Don't take the chance of going down into hell
I know where I will be in the afterlife
Don't take the chance of going down into hell

Don't take the chance of going down into hell

Our souls will ascend to the gates of heaven
Our souls will be judged
By the deeds we've done

As the meadows wither in the fall
We will fade
As our mighty towers fall
We are flung into forever

Fading, decaying, degrading

We don't stay young forever
Someday we grow old
We don't stay young forever
Don't let your hearts grow cold
(Fading, decaying, degrading)

We don't stay young forever
Someday we grow old
We don't stay young forever
Don't let your hearts grow cold
(Fading, decaying, degrading)

We don't stay young forever
Someday we grow old
We don't stay young forever
Don't let your hearts grow cold
(Fading, decaying, degrading)

We don't stay young forever
Someday we grow old
We don't stay young forever
Don't let your hearts grow cold
(Fading, decaying, degrading)

(Fading, decaying, degrading, melting away)

8) Home
7:19, lyrics:
As geese take their flight
Under bleak autumn skies
Their calls resound, I hear the call
They're drawn to a new home
To clear water reflecting the dawn

You're calling from beyond the clouds
To a new home
You're calling from beyond the clouds
To a new home
(When leaves fall and sun fades
Creation cries out for that day)

Before winter's dawn, as petals fall
And leaves glow gold, I hear the call
As autumn bids my thoughts to roam
Now is when I think of home

You call me home
When times are hard and skies are grey
When leaves fall and sun fades
Creation cries out for that day

The earth's beauty
Is but a glimpse of heaven
Nature's only a tribute
The scent of a flower
From a world unspoilt
Music but an echo

As I descend into the fields
Where my fathers lay
My soul is already ascending
Grave, where is your power?
Death, where is your sting?
My tombstone marks
Where my life begins

9) Winter's Dance
3:26, instrumental

Through My Eyes (album, UNRELEASED)

Guest appearances that differ from the final version:
David Cooney - Harsh Vocals (later did chants too)
James Dalton - Trombone (later did sackbut too)
Andrea Bathgate - Piano (didn't appear on the album at all)
John Neale - Narration (didn't appear on the album at all)
Possibly, Jeff Ward - Vocals, Bass (didn't appear on the album at all)

PRODUCTION CREDITS
Eugen Dodenhoeft - Mixing & mastering (didn't ultimately do this)
Dave Lawson - Drum engineering (didn't ultimately do this)
Joshua Shaw - Assistant engineer for piano (didn't ultimately do this)

Draft version of what would later become "Psalms of the Risen Dead". Planned to be released on CD and download in 2010. Different from the final version, we can see track 1 had the subtitle "Lift Your Eyes". "March of the Risen Dead" and "On Eagle's Wings" had shorter titles. Track lengths differ for just about every song. Going by track lengths, "Slave to the False Messiah" most closely resembles "Mortality", and "Save Me from Myself" most resembles "Though a Thousand Fall". It's unclear though if they're actually the same songs. "Glorified Demons" was removed altogether. It seems the track length for "Evanescent" wasn't decided yet. They just wrote "8-10.00" which I assume means "8 to 10 minutes".

Apparently Andrea Bathgate's contribution will still happen. It'll just be featured on some future release instead.

1) Uproot(Lift Your Eyes) 5:20

1) More info on both digital versions of "Apocalyptic Visions". 2) Is "Vanquished Souls" meant to be cover art, or am I misunderstanding? 3) What year did this band form? 4) I have a note from Myspace saying Eugen also did bass on "Apocalyptic Visions". Is this correct? 5) Where does the "ecthirion-waterfall_edited-1" image come from (shown below)? 6) More info about their time as AxioM? 7) A couple places online, I've found "Apocalyptic Visions" artwork with different coloring.
