Cullen embraced basic Christian beliefs around 2013-2014, but remained private about it and didn't know a lot about it. As he did more research and grew in faith, he fully converted to Christianity, starting Dawnbreaker soon after. Originally, Dawnbreaker was planned to be a side project alongside his other, secular projects, but shortly afterward, he decided to end all of them and focus solely on Christian music.

About the band name, Cullen says:
"One who breaks Dawn, shines light into the darkness. This describes my goal for the band - to spread truth about Christianity in the darkest corners of music (i.e. black/death metal)
In fairness, it is also somewhat inspired by the video game Skyrim - there's a sword called the Dawnbreaker, the "sword of evil's bane," which does maximum damage to undead/vampiric characters. I hope the music will have the same effect on demonic, evil "powers and principalities"
Also [cross-reference] Psalm 57:9 "I will wake the dawn" i.e. music of praise and glorification of God will bring a new day (or in my case, a new chapter in my music career, and life as a whole)"
