"Mater Dolorosa stands for 'Mother of Sorrows' which is referred to Jesus's mother Mary and the seven sorrows she faced in her life. One particular sorrow that's emphasized here is the witnessing of her Son's crucifixion. Imagine watching your own child that you raised, completely innocent, be taken away by others to be tortured and, in this case, executed. Surely this would be any mother's worst nightmare. Christ however was beyond simply being innocent; He was sinless.
We have the joy of knowing Christ by this crucifixion ultimately defeated death and rose from the grave as atonement for our sins, but the Sorrowful Mystery of the Crucifixion is a grave reminder for us how much Christ suffered to grant us forgiveness. This Sorrowful Mystery should be reflected as encouragement for a perpetually repentant mindset to love Christ back as He loves us."
