BAND NAME: Élan (Elan)
GENRE: Lo-fi Black/Doom Metal, with Ambient Influences
STATUS: Unknown
LOCATION: USA (Illinois (early), Connecticut (later))

Élan O'Neal currently does not identify as Christian.

The band has kept more or less the same sound throughout all releases, but the debut EP is very noticeably more experimental / ambient / raw / creepy than the other releases, which are in a far more "standard" metal style.

Metal Archives says this project started in 2007, but I'm not certain.
Began as a solo project, but Aaron was recruited sometime before "For They Eternally ..." was released.

Lineup:
Élan O'Neal - Everything (early), Vox/Lyrics, Keys, Drums, Bodhrán (later)
Aaron Lewis - Guitars, Bass

As Our Earth Decays (EP, 31 July, 2007, Gud er Sannhet Records)
Format: CD-R, slimcase

The colors in these scans aren't perfect. They're accurate enough, just not totally 100% perfect. I made a reasonable attempt to correct them, but my scanner had a fair bit of trouble with it.

There are a few more pictures of this album in the "miscellaneous" section at the bottom of the page.

The (wreath? / crown of thorns?) in the layout appears to be the Élan logo, or some variation of it, pasted over and over to create a pattern.

Note: A comment on Myspace reads,
"Man, now I might have to buy your album again, with new artwork and the remix. Are there any new songs on it that weren't on the version I have?"
Could this mean there was an older version of this before the Gud er Sannhet version? Or would it be referring to his other band Day of Ascension, perhaps?

1) Prelude
1:32, lyrics:
What is death, but life?
What is life, but untimely death?

2) Shrouded in Torment
5:58, lyrics:
I'm wasting the days away.
Physically alive; mentally dead;
Insecure; (I have) relentless nights of unrest.

Fevered by my thoughts, longing for peace of mind.
Sheep, led to the slaughter;
I surrender myself to any trace of positivity.

Waiting for an answer without asking a question.
Thought provoked fear abides in this troubled mind.

Cynical, relentless I have become.
Waiting for an end, hoping for it to come now.

3) Humanity's Self-Inflicted Apocalypse
3:55, lyrics:
For too long has man desired to be God!
Carnal scum is what we have become.
With every hour comes a new hate.
With every breath, another man's mind is raped.

The love of slaughter, the embrace of hate
Brings us to our self-inflicted human fate.

How can man govern the world if he cannot even control himself?

Far too long have we been cast into a spell.
With each act, we recreate our world into hell.

Fire falls from the skies; inferno sweeps humankind.
Nowhere can you not hear the cries of man meeting his own demise.

I reject this pitiful way, full of deceit, lies, and hate.
Only when the world turns to dust will the universe be free from disgust.

4) Requiem
1:25, lyrics:
A great battle was once held here. Both armies inflicted pure chaos on the opposing side. The fields were drenched with pools of blood. The corpses of those lost at sea were numerically washed onto the shore. The skies were filled with the thickest grey haze; the sun was nowhere to be found. When the rains weren't falling, there was still a downpour of bombs, twisted metals, and the limbs of unfortunate soldiers.
Upon passing through these fields, I found a motionless, dismembered body of a young soldier. So much damage had been inflicted unto his body, one could argue that he was never human. What this young soldier did not know was that the sacrifice of his life, as well as thousands upon thousands of others, was all in vain. Their world is now in such a state of fear and unrest, there never can be hope for peace.
These men; young, courageous, and aspiring, all died for nothing.

5) Unending Battle
9:07, lyrics:
- PART I: The Problem -

The morning skies are burning.
Fields illuminated by the overcast bleed.
Inferno encasing all that was.

The earth itself frantically dying.
The dark legion comes forth;
Led by the black hand of the serpent;
Destroying all in its path.

Accursed beings; reigning terror...

- PART II: The Solution -

In the midst comes the opposing army;
White figures littering the earth!
Bearing the golden cross to serve a purpose.

The two armies meet, apprehensive.
All light a witness in the opposition.
They all at once collide!

This marks the beginning of the last war ever fought; an epic battle.
